I’m Tom Raleigh — Thomas J. Raleigh on the book covers, “Pops” to the people who matter most.

I've been writing my whole life, one way or another. Two books made it all the way to print: Time Enough for the Henchman, a novel about a Chicago gang member in 1929 who gets his reprieve decades later, and I'll Be Watching You, ninety-four pages of a grandfather's reflections on the things that matter most — call it a misguided guide, or rants from a troubled old man; I've heard both.

There's also a drawer's worth of essays — on politics mostly, and whatever else refused to leave me alone that week.  They used to live in Word documents and Facebook posts. They live here now.

You see, I believe Trump is a bad actor steeped in poor character. I believe he is responsible for the erosion of freedoms, the rule of law, our place in the world order, and the loss of our shared moral high ground.  I’m upset that the foundational pillars of our society: liberty, justice, and truth, are being tyrannized by a criminal surrounded by criminals who are wittingly dismantling our government institutions, health-care progress, and social safety nets. But what really concerns me about Trump’s brand of leadership is the naïveté of all those that follow him, and do so with inexplicable reverence.

What you'll find here is plain talk, mostly an attempt at civil engagement. You have an opportunity to agree or disagree.  I write about the country because I love it, and it worries me.  And when I've said what I came to say, I stop — which is where the name of this project comes from. For years, I've ended my arguments the same way, and I see no reason to stop now.
