Capitalism: The Great Engine Turned Auction Block

✕ Thomas J. Raleigh · October 16, 2026 · 1 min read

I have to ask why MAGA gets so upset at the mere mention of “socialism”. You hear the condemnations, mostly by Republican doomsayers in their political attack ads targeting Democrats.

As if socialism was some sort of medieval plague.

I understand. It’s all about the fearmongering. It’s what dim-witted MAGA does best. No facts, no thought process, no truths.

“They use the word social democrat because it sounds so nice, but it’s really communism you’re talking about.” ~ Donald Trump

“The left-wing alternative to a strong American family is a socialist state.” ~ J.D. Vance

“America’s dangerous flirtation with socialism leads to poverty and oppression” ~ Nikki Haley

“Socialism always leads to misery, poverty, and tyranny.” ~ Marco Rubio

Maybe it’s all because “regressive” right-wingers like Trump inexplicably associate well-intended socialist aspirations with hard-core communist pessimism.  You hear our simple-minded president interchange the two all the time. It’s a fear tactic when you lack intelligence because you don’t know the difference.

Yet, with all the political attacks on their opponents, and their penchant for alarmism, these same folks don’t seem to have any concerns when referencing “socialist” inspired programs for the common good like Social Security, Medicare, public schools, safety services, libraries, parks, or public highways.

We can debate all day long on this subject.  But I can say for certain that socialist principles are not the enemy.

For me, “capitalism” run rampant poses more of a risk.

If not managed properly, bad things happen.

It was unrestrained capitalism that discontinued our pensions, depressed real wages, and sent our jobs overseas. It was reckless capitalism that treated healthcare as a commodity for profit, leading to skyrocketing medical costs. It’s runaway capitalism that is currently exhausting affordable housing, and causing underfunded public-school systems to fail. Likewise, it’s unprincipled capitalism that incentivizes businesses to cut costs at the expense of severe ecological consequences. Not only that, but it’s those once revered capitalist tenets gone unchecked that have turned renowned news outlets into divisive, click-driven, tabloid journalists.

And as we’ve all seen, crony-capitalism practiced by industry giants has adversely influenced the very government bodies meant to regulate them, putting half of Washington on the take.
