The Reflection Pool Saga: A Microcosmic Example of the Trump Administration’s Malfeasance

·       Another useless “solution needing a problem” scenario.

·       In April, without expert consultation or congressional input, Trump singly decides to change the National Mall’s reflecting pool, purposely designed in a way to create a perfect mirror image of the Washington Monument.  It was working exactly as intended.

·       Trump’s solution:  He decides the Reflection Pool was “filthy”, hires Atlantic Industrial Coatings (“my pool guy”), and wants it to look more like a bright swimming pool.

·       All standard procurement channels are ignored in favor of a no bid $1.6M contract.

·       Trump wants “American Flag Blue”, claiming pool sealant will be made with “powerful rubber that can’t even be cut with a knife”.

·       Construction starts in early June.  The cost increases to $16.2M…paid for by taxpayers.

·       In a rush to completion by July 4, the pool quickly becomes a warm Petri dish of algae gunk.  On June 18, the sealant fails and floats to the surface.

·       On June 19, David Hearn reaches in to touch a piece of the floating liner.  He is tackled, and arrested.

·       On June 22, in CNN and ABC interviews, Interior Secretary and Trump sycophant, Doug Burgum, claimed to have photographic and police reports as “proof” vandals cut the pool liner.

·       On June 25, Trump claims “sick, deranged, vandals” threw fertilizer into the water at night, and used a knife or box cutter to slash a 250-350 ft. gash in the pool liner.

·       On July 2, ex-FOX regular, and Trump appointed US Attorney, Jeanine Pirro announces David Hearn’s federal grand jury indictment for felony destruction of government property. 

·       On July 31, the DOJ submitted a 19-page court filing stating all pool damage issues were caused by shoddy construction.  In the filing, federal prosecutors openly admitted that the Interior Department gave them inaccurate information, that there was no vandalism, and that the disaster was entirely caused by a “rushed and flawed installation process” by the contractor.

·       All charges against David Hearn were dropped.

·       Same inept contractor re-hired to handle the subsequent repair work.
