Stay in your lane, Markwayne!
Here’s a guy trying to do the right thing, and a good example of how the overriding Trump factor gets in the way of progress.
Following deadly officer-involved shootings during a series of vehicle stops, newly appointed DHS Secretary, Markwayne Mullin, called for a temporary pause on the practice. Well-intentioned, right? Trump publicly condemned the move and immediately countermanded Mullin’s decision.
At a National Governors Association meeting, Mullin suggested the U.S. should expand employment-based visa programs to address labor shortages. Made perfect sense. Yet, MAGA loyalists slammed the proposal, arguing it conflicted with the administration's "mass deportation" agenda.
Mullin also drew fierce criticism from MAGA hardliners after stating that ICE would not conduct sweeps of big-box store parking lots or job-site raids. Activists accused him of being an "amnesty advocate", forcing Mullin to issue a clarifying statement on X asserting: "NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever."
After all the MAGA base criticisms, and in an apparent effort to get back into Trump’s good graces, Mullin got well over his skis on a matter clearly not related to his job title.
So, what does the man, responsible for securing the nation's borders, preventing terrorism, enforcing immigration laws, protecting national leaders, and coordinating emergency responses do?
He claims a major voter fraud discovery on national TV, of course. 250,000 noncitizen voters in 4 states, no less!
More proof that U.S. elections are “rigged” would surely get him back in Trump’s good graces.
And so, Mullin announced his big reveal on July 16, focusing on Nevada, claiming he’d uncovered as many as 15,903 noncitizen votes cast, well-documented in that state’s 2024 voter rolls.
Unfortunately for Mullin, follow-up meetings between Nevada election officials and the Department of Homeland Security last month revealed that their initial claim was unsubstantiated. After manually reviewing the “15,903 noncitizen votes” touted by Mullin, only 185 were confirmed to be noncitizens.
Then, on September 24, it was determined that every single one of the remaining 185 were found to be lawful U.S. citizens.
