A couple weeks ago, CNN’s Capitol Hill reporter, Manu Raju, questioned House Speaker Mike Johnson about whether the American public should judge him for referring to the war with Iran as a “short term skirmish”.

In the exchange, Raju noted that Johnson had previously characterized the conflict as a “temporary blip” for gas prices. He then asked if the public should hold Johnson accountable for anything to do with the war, given his responsibilities.

Johnson snapped back, “That’s one of the stupidest questions you've ever asked”.

The reporter argued that Johnson bore responsibility because he was selling the conflict to the American people. Waving off more questions, Johnson rhetorically asked, “So, should the House Speaker be held responsible for the duration of a global military conflict around the globe? You need to answer that question.”

I’ll answer it for you, Mike.

You hold the gavel, for Christ’s sake! The 1st Article of the U.S. Constitution gives sole power to Congress to declare war.

Both the House Armed Services, and the House Foreign Affairs Committees report to you. In turn, it’s their job to deal with military oversight, national security policy, funding authorizations, and military deployments.

So, yeah, it’s your responsibility.

Perhaps we should walk our resident “Keebler Elf” through the process and explain that Congress does indeed have the responsibility to declare war, fund the military, and regulate the armed forces.

NYUK, NYUK, NYUK!!!

NUFF SED!!!
