# DJT: An Unsung Hero or More Stolen Valor?

Yesterday, in what started out as a well-intended, 9/11 memorial speech honoring first responders at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., Trump suddenly digressed, talking about his personal involvement with clean-up efforts at Ground Zero.

It didn’t take long before he wormed his way into a rambling stretch of how he brought in “over 100” of his own construction crewmen to help dig through the rubble.

Over the years, Trump's descriptions of his own recovery efforts at Ground Zero have varied. In earlier renditions during campaign rallies and prior memorial events, his account expanded, saying he actually brought in “hundreds” of men, and personally helped clear rubble.

But then, to those in attendance, our wannabe hero took it a step further, detailing how two firefighters physically lifted and carried him away from a building adjacent to the recovery site.

“The United States Steel Building was creaking, really creaking, and we thought it was going to fall down. The truth is, it creaked a lot. It still creaks. And I’ll never forget two firemen. We thought it was coming down on top of us, and two firemen, big strong guys. And I’m not the smallest guy in the world. They grabbed me under the arm, said, ‘Got to get out of here.’ And they literally lifted me up. This is not easy to do. I’m big. They started running with me. I said ‘Fellas, I can run by myself,’ but they were amazing.”

In my view, this is what stolen valor looks and sounds like.

Fact-checkers and independent journalists, including PBS, PolitiFact, and *Washington Post* have extensively investigated Trump’s claims. Retired New York City Fire Department officials and operational commanders who managed the site have stated there is no documented record, photograph, or memory of any independent group, let alone the “100-plus” manned crew deployed by Trump working on site. Because of the human toll, all recovery work from the moment of collapse to months after was strictly supervised and meticulously logged by the police, fire department, and emergency services command.
